"Like the dryad, another kind of Faery is the oakman, who is said to live in oak trees. In the North of England, the oakman is a guardian of the animals. The familir saying is "Faery folks are in old oaks." In fact, the oak is considered the tree of the dead and the abode of departed spirits. In her book "The Fairy Caravan," Beatrix Potter describes the oakman as dwarfish folk with red toadstool caps and red noses that live in a thrice-cut copse covered with bluebells."

When I read this passage of Sirona Knights' book I had my own vision of how this Oakman would look. I didn't see him as being one of the more passive do gooders of the Faery kingdom. I saw him more as a mangy old man with a firey wit and an insatiable desire to play mean tricks on humans. Though wise in his years, he'll always have the tricks of his youth. Though he may find causing harmless turmoil among us humans amusing, he does fancy our tobacco and "mead", and will befriend a human if for just the cause of being offered to come and drink.
